Introduction to the Historic Mantels Database

Research completed by Seth Hinshaw, Building Documentation Specialist

Welcome to this mantels database, which includes the most common mantels in millwork catalogs!

The database, a work in progress, currently covers millwork catalogs from the 1869 Hinkle & Co. catalog to the catalogs of 1904. I hope you will find this useful.

If you would like information on earlier mantels, primarily from the Georgian, Federal, and Greek Revival periods, an excellent reference is Henry J. Kauffman's The American Fireplace: Chimneys, Mantelpieces, Fireplaces, & Accessories (1972).

To remember the correct spelling (mantel, not mantle), remember that we put the TELephone on the manTEL.

Send any corrections to seth @ old-doors.info. I don't check that e-mail every day but I will reply.
