Name: 4x4 DHS Window
Years: 1850s-1914
History: Four over four double hung sash windows emerged in the 1850s during the early years of the Italianate style. The window was called the "eight-light window" until the mid-twentieth century. By 1860, Italianate houses often were built with 4x4 windows of similar width as earlier windows but much taller.
