Arched mantels with Spandrel (circa 1860 to 1880)

Mantels / Italianate mantels / Arched mantels / Arched mantels with spandrel

Arched mantels with spandrels were the most common type of arched mantel in the 1870s and are the mantel type most associated with Italianate mantels. These mantels were shipped with four parts: the curved jambs (two pieces), the medallion that covered the seam between the curved jambs, and the mantel shelf.

Mantel shelves associated with this mantel type were mostly shaped. The majority of examples appearing in catalogs (58%) were shelf B (shown here), with half of the remainder being shelf A (22%). Other shelves common to this mantel type were shelf G (12%) and shelf E (5%).
