Plain 4-piece rectangular mantels were completely unadorned. Their starkness contrasts with their contemporaries. The shelves of these mantels (as illustrated in catalogs) were almost entirely of variety A, the simple rectangular shelf. Some of these mantels did not include the capital or plinth of the jambs (both are shown in the example here).
