Decorative rectangular mantels (circa 1865 to 1880)
| Mantels / Italianate mantels / Rectangular mantels / Decorative 4-piece rectangular mantels
Decorative rectangular mantels incorporated types of embellishments of the 1870s. They stand in contrast with the starkness of the plain 4-piece mantels of the time. In most of these mantels, the frieze ran above the jambs. The shelves of these mantels (as illustrated in catalogs) were 72% variety A, the simple rectangular shelf, plus 16% unstated and 12% types B, E, and G. These mantels sometimes had more than four pieces, usually six.
