Arched Mantel with Frieze (circa 1865 to 1880)


Mantels / Italianate mantels / Arched mantels / Arched mantels with frieze

These arched mantels include a frieze, often narrow, over the arch. Some of these mantels have full-height jambs rising to the level of the shelf, while others have the frieze extending above the jambs. Arched mantels with a frieze mostly had the simple rectangular shelf A (60%, shown here), with the remainder divided equally between shelf B (see below) and shelf E. These mantels were the most likely to appear with overmantels; the example shown below with a merlon overmantel appears in the Barber & Henderson catalog of 1878:
