History |
The Western Sash & Door Company was a Kansas City millwork company of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The company opened its doors on 1/6/1883 (Muscatine Weekly Journal, 12/21/1883 list of events of the past year). Its address was 1307-1309 West Twelfth Street. William Huttig (1870-1930) served as the company's president throughout its existence; it appears that Western was always independent of the other Huttig millwork companies. Western produced millwork catalogs in 1899 and 1906, each of which was larger than the Huttig catalogs of those decades. Western changed its name to the Huttig Mill Works by 1916, but soon thereafter it became financially unsound. Milling operations ceased in 1921, and the property was handed to a trust company to liquidate its assets and satisfy its creditors (Springfield News-Leader, 11/19/1921).
