History: The one-over-one double hung sash window first appeared in the 1870s and became common in residential construction in the 1880s. It was called the "two-light window" until the 1950s.

The earliest 1x1 windows were installed in the 1870s. The window first appears in the newspapers.com database in 1873 in an article discussing the Ashland block in Chicago (Chicago Evening Post, 4/26/1873). Articles referencing the window appear in increasing volume during the 1880s. It first appears in a millwork catalog in 1887.
