Cleveland Cottage Door

Seth Hinshaw, 4/23/2019

Over the weekend I happened to see an example of a phase one cottage door of the Cleveland variety. Although the Cleveland doors were common at the end of the nineteenth century, they were mostly removed and replaced in the twentieth century. The door is shown on page 91 of my book A Field Guide to American Residential Doors.

The Cleveland cottage door was produced from 1888 to 1900. It was the version of the cottage door that was marketed to Democrats of the time, as opposed to the Grant and Garfield doors that were marketed to Republicans. Doors with large plate glass windows over the lock rail first appeared in millwork catalogs in 1888. The Cleveland door featured a delicate frame around the window that featured a rounded, centered merlon with a floral motif at the top, horizontal scoring along the lock rail, and a decorative panel below that featured a fortified border and a pressed wood floral motif in the field.
