One of the earliest patented side locks was the Arnold Side Lock. W.E. Arnold received patent #6227 for this invention in 1849. The Arnold Side Lock used a metal anchor housed in the mortise. To lift the sash, a person would push up the inner tab of the anchor, causing the far end of the anchor to retract into the mortise. The window frame often had pockets at intervals to allow the anchor to hold the window open at specified heights, so it was necessary to hold up the tab in order to close the window, too. Once the person released the tab, the anchor would withdraw into the mortise and try to engage a pocket in the window frame. The Arnold Side Lock was quite popular and is mentioned in multiple newspaper articles that can be found at newspapers.com. Arnold anchors are periodically available for purchase on online auction sites.
