A competing type of side sash lock emerged in the 1850s. G.H. Gray received patent #7240 in 1850 for the Gray Side Lock, which was also frequently cited in period newspapers. The Gray Side Lock involved an anchor in a triangular-shaped housing. A key could be inserted into the housing that would open the two legs of the anchor and free the sash for movement; when the key was removed, the legs would spring into place to restore the tension between the sash and the window frame. The Gray Side Lock was also heavily advertised in newspapers in the 1850s.
