The Payson Sash Fastener was produced for roughly ten years in the late nineteenth century. Joseph R. Payson of Chicago received a patent for his idea (patent #171694) in 1876. His fastener appeared in hardware catalogs from 1880 (Strelinger page 177) to 1891 (Hibberd page 348). Payson's idea was to have a rotating arm mounted on a 45 degree angle. When open, the arm extended along the upper sash parallel to the lower sash. When closed, the arm gripped a knob on the lower sash that prevented the operation of the sash.
